Choosing gifts for your mother is not an easy task to do. When we decide to buy a present, we cannot be 100 percent sure that she will really appreciate it or not. How will you know what she’ll appreciate? You are either a single mother yourself, you asked one what she could really use, or you read this article. A little bit of knowledge in this area goes a long way.

What you SHOULD NOT do:

Do not buy expensive things for her because you think she may like them. You may think it will be greatly appreciated because she likely wouldn’t or couldn’t afford to buy it for herself. This idea is wrong That’s usually not that case. She’ll be very gracious to your face and probably genuinely appreciate the thought. But she may be thinking “couldn’t she have just given me the money so I could get my brakes fixed” or “yeesch, I could pay my electric bill with the money she spent on this!” What many single mothers need is relief. They need a small slice of life taken off their shoulders. They need someone to take their children for three hours so they can have an uninterrupted bath or a nap.

What you SHOULD do:

What would bring a single mother great joy is to have you contact any of the utility companies and pay a month’s bill. She’d love car wash coupons because that may be something frivolous to her, but who doesn’t appreciate a nice clean car. “Let’s see, do I get eggs and milk, or do I drive my car through the car wash?” Or just show up someday with a hose and a bucket and wash it for her – inside and out. Make up babysitting coupons or better yet, just insist on picking up the kids Friday night to take them to a dinner and a movie. Give Mom some space.

What you have to do is finding a common theme in your mother. They don’t necessarily need help and wouldn’t ask for it, but if they received help, it would mean the WORLD to her. Instead of thinking of things that are special and pretty for her, consider what would make her life easier. This isn’t like the old adage you don’t buy your wife a frying pan for her birthday. With single parents, moms in particular, you need to keep in mind relief. How can you give this woman a small nugget of relief to make her life easier?

- A new plant for her garden. If your mom loves gardening, try buying her a plant. There is always room for another plant in any garden. Check with a local nursery to find one that will grow in your area. To make it extra special, include a card and offer to plant it for her. The plant will be a living reminder of your gift each time she is out in her garden.

- Mother’s Day Cookies or Bouquet. You probably ate a lot of mom’s cookies as a kid, so this year why not send her some in return? You can find lots of cookie designs at online gift stores, or try your local bakery to see what they can make for you. Heart and flower shapes are the most popular for Mother’s Day cookie gift bouquets. Personalizing the cookies can make your gift even more memorable.

- Coupon for Housework or Home Improvements. Most moms always have plenty of housework that needs to be done, or ideas on improvements they’d like to make to their homes. You can make a homemade “coupon” offering your services to assist her with any of these tasks. Cleaning her windows or re-painting a room in her house would make a great Mother’s Day gift.

- Mother’s Day Gift Basket. You can make a gift basket for mother’s day or purchase one online. If you decide to make one, pick out some gourmet food items that she would enjoy. You can also add a few items based on her hobbies, be it seeds for the gardener, a book for moms that like to read, or something else your mother does for her hobby. Wrap your gift basket in a big gift bag and top it off with a bow to make a great presentation.

- An escorted shopping spree. A lot of moms don’t take the time to go shopping for themselves or spend their clothes money on the kids instead. If your mom’s wardrobe hasn’t been updated in awhile, offer to take her to her favorite store for a new outfit. You can help her pick out something she likes, and she’ll wear your new gift proudly the next time she is out.

Kids are always wanting to make mom a gift for Mother’s Day. They want something that is all their own, without much help from anyone, so here are some ideas that are both inexpensive and easy for them.

A home made jewelry box: Give the child a small paper mache box – sort of like a jewelry box, any shape with a lid. Now, put down some newspaper, put acrylic paints, brushes, glitter, buttons, charms, ribbon or lace, glue, colored markers or crayons down on the paper, and let your child do the work. You will be surprised what they can come up with.

They can also use the same materials to make a card for Mom on Mother’s Day. Just get a thick card stock to fold in half so they can decorate it. You can also use poster board and help them make a big “Happy Mother’s Day” sign, to greet her in the morning with.

Another idea is to get some cheap plastic beads with big holes, some string and let them make a matching set of bracelets and a necklace for mom.

Cut out hearts of red, pink, lavender paper or poster board, color it, put glitter on it and hang them all over the house.

Modeling clay is always a nice medium to play with. There are clays that only need to dry in the air and need no baking at all. Modeling clay allows your child to form anything that comes to mind. They can use their imagination with no limits, except for the limits of the clay. Once the project is dry, your child can paint it or dress it up any way they want. It is an inexpensive way and fun way of letting your child make and give of their heart to their mom on Mother’s Day.

Check your local craft shop for other project ideas that are appropriate for this age group. Take your little one to the store and let them decide what they want to make for mommy. Just remember to read the age group limit on the outside of the box.

Always remember to supervise the children, especially with glue, paint and scissors around.
